“It's not enough”: why more is needed to lift people out of poverty

To be treated with fairness and respect. It’s how any of us would want to be treated.

Yet, at a time when the Government is intent on delivering massive tax cuts to the wealthiest in our society, people receiving income support are forced to endure the indignity of living in poverty.

But we all know poverty is a political choice. The Government has the power to change this.

We’re not talking by $20 or $30 a week – we’re talking about a meaningful increase that will mean people living on income support can afford to eat proper meals and not worry about whether they will still have a place to live when the rent is due.

This is why, we've launched a new report highlighting the gross inadequacy of income support and calling on the Government to urgently raise the rate.

Can you send your MP a copy of the report?

Email your MP the report

You can use the form below to email your Federal MP. Enter your street address to find the contact details of your representative.

If you're not sure what to write, here are are a few suggestions:

  1. Introduce yourself. For example a little about who you are, where you live, if you receive income support, and your situation.
  2. Is an extra $20 a week enough? If you receive income support, share your own experience. Will the extra $20 a week that will come into effect on 20 September make a difference?
  3. What you are asking for. For example, if you receive income support, what would make a significant difference to your living situation? What should the rate of income support be? What would you be able to do if you didn't have to worry about surviving, and had the freedom to live on a secure income?
  4. Send them the report. The link to the report will automatically be included in the email field box. Feel free to add anything else you'd like to say about the report findings.
  5. Ask for a response. Let your representative know you expect to hear back from them.
